A lot of shops sell this system with Denon's own speakers and bell wire speaker cable. Nothing wrong with that, except that the Mission M30is are miles better, come in a variety of different finishes, have a superb optional wall bracket and cost virtually the same! What's more, we also supply heavy grade speaker cable plus gold plugs with this system, so the overall result is that our combo sounds much better than the 'bog standard' Denon offering.

These clever units have a 'knuckle' joint, which allows the speaker to be angled to the side or up or down.

I have been in the Hi-Fi business for a fair old time (I must qualify for carbon dating soon!) but I can still remember the very first systems I sold in a pokey little shop on the corner of South St Exeter. They were made up of several big silver units, weighing about a stone each (we didn't have Kilos in those days!) that were housed in 'tower block' chipboard cabinets, with smoked glass doors. They would typically consist of a turntable, amp and cassette (no CD in those days either) and would cost about £500. Now back in the late 1970s you could buy a penthouse apartment in Paris for £500 (honest!) so these macho systems represented a huge financial investment. Consequently, they were the domain of the 'male of the house' who proceeded to generate enough marital friction to endanger the baby boom, by insisting on having his 'pride and joy', plus accompanying record collection on full view in the living room. Inevitably, the look of these systems put pay to any aspirations the 'female of the house' might have to join the Carol Smilie Changing Rooms set! As the years ticked by these 'tower Hi-Fis' gathered dust in the way that only an old Hi-Fi can and migrated to their final resting place - the dark corner of the lounge. Which is where you'll find many of them today!

They were well made units (which is why they've lasted so long) but finally, after years of use and abuse, they are starting to give up the ghost. We are seeing increasingly large numbers, iced with dust, coming back through our doors, with a whole variety of ailments, ranging from simple dry joints to attempted spontaneous combustion.

Let's face it, these systems don't owe anyone a penny - if my dishwasher lasts as long, it will probably be nominated for the Guiness Book Of Records! So, NOW is the time to liberate your lounge, re-establish verbal contact with your wife and CHANGE YOUR HI-FI! Things have moved on a fair way in 20 years. These days, your Hi-Fi doesn't have to be the size of a freezer, cost as much as a holiday, or look like the flight deck of Concorde. What's more, it will have such niceties as full remote control, CD playback tuner pre-sets etc.

Here's one of our biggest sellers - Denon's lovely F101
Shown with optional Cassette deck (£149)

Forget about suitcase-sized Hi-Fi, this whole 2 box system is only 10 inches wide and 7 inches high! For that you get a high quality CD, Radio and Amp. This may well be all you need, but if you fancy a cassette deck or minidisc, Denon do two optional add on units, which match perfectly and can be stacked under the CD player. Forget about a rats nest of mains plugs too, because although the 101 is a genuine separates system, it works off just one mains plug - even if you add the optional cassette deck on! On top of that, there's also a turntable input, if you fancy getting back into the 'black stuff' and several other spare inputs for your TV etc to play through. The whole system works from one remote too; that includes all the CD/tuner's most useful facilities, plus volume on the amp - very handy.

Of course, all this would be meaningless if the sound quality was a pale imitation of a full-sized separates system, but it isn't. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the little Denon will wipe the floor with many systems of 20 years ago that cost (in real terms) ten times the price. It makes old systems sound like they are being played through a duvet!
