Most of today's Home Cinema racks look pretty - and sound pretty awful!
This is because many of the design elements that give a rack its good looks, also rob it of its sound quality.
The Partington Minim is different.
Here we have a rack built by people who have not turned their backs on the lessons learned by acoustic designers over the last two decades. Back in the days of the turntable, it soon became apparent that what you put your Hi-fi on had a dramatic affect on the way it sounded. One of the most convincing demonstrations I ever attended involved showing the difference in sound between a turntable placed on the floor, and a turntable placed on a custom support. The turntable sounded hugely better on the support.
This is because all Hi-fi is, to a lesser or greater degree, a microphone - in other words it can pick up acoustic feedback from its surroundings. This feedback then find its way into the electronic circuit boards on the unit in question and 'colours' the sound. In its simplest form the feedback can be generated by the sound the Hi-fi itself creates in the room - producing a sort of feedback loop of distortion. However, it's also important to realise that our surroundings are also constantly being bombarded by subsonic noise from traffic, air conditioning units, planes etc. etc. We can't hear this noise, but it still ends up in our equipment, colouring the sound it makes.
The acoustic designers of the past learned that the way to filter out this unwanted noise is to isolate the equipment from it's surroundings, using rigid designs, with differential mass layering and minimal contact points between layers. This sort of design ethos is very well demonstrated by the modern Partington designs - take a look at the middle shelf and you'll see what I mean. This shelf has the versatility of being moveable but is very well isolated from the adjacent shelves , which are in turn isolated from the rest of the structure and the floor. The result is a tight clean presentation that puts many of the pretty boy racks to shame.
