One of the earliest examples we have of humans making music, comes from a prehistoric cave painting in Ariege, France. It shows two men, clad in animal skins, hunting a reindeer. One hunter is carrying a spear, the other has in his hands, what at first appears to be a bow and arrow. On closer inspection, however, this "bow" turns out to be a simple harp, which the second figure is gently plucking, as the hunters stalk their prey.

What is he doing?

The answer to this question tells us a great deal about the intricate relationship that exists between human beings and the collection of sounds we call music. The hunter is, in fact, trying to cast a spell over the reindeer. He believes that music is powerful magic, which will mesmerise the animal and make it easier to capture. The ancient people thought of music as a gift from the gods - playing music gave them power to overcome the problems they faced in day to day life.

From these stone age beginnings, the magic of music has played an integral part in each stage of human development. Every culture, every Nation, every tribe, every movement, has had its own musical identity - from the horns, harps and drums of the Egyptian, Greek and Roman Empires, to the Jack-booted rallies of the Third Reich.

Nowadays, an awful lot has changed, but the fundamentals still apply. We don't have to worry about bringing down the rain, curing simple illnesses, or making the crops grow, but we do have another bundle of problems to contend with. Today, we live in the "global village", where technology is the new god and instability reigns. We are swept along by a tide of change, which seems to constantly challenge the deep seated values of the past. Life is lived at a frantic pace, bringing with it a new generation of stress and anxiety.

Well, roll up your sleeves, because we have the perfect antidote! Music is more than just a sequence of sounds, it is a universal language of emotion, which links us with our primitive past. Music soothes and relaxes us, yet stimulates the very part of our psychological make-up that every-day life destroys. It is food for our souls.
