If your front speakers are bi-wire capable, you can use the 6th and 7th channels of this 7.1 amplifier to 'bi-amp'. This means that four amplifiers are driving the front speakers not two, giving a very useful boost in performance.
Old HDMI vs New HDMI 1.3 (which is why Blu Ray uses HDMI 1.3 !)
Higher speed: HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) to support the demands of future HD display devices, such as higher resolutions, Deep Color and high frame rates. In addition, built into the HDMI 1.3 specification is the technical foundation that will let future versions of HDMI reach significantly higher speeds.
Deep Color: HDMI 1.3 supports 10-bit, 12-bit and 16-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 8-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification, for stunning rendering of over one billion colors in unprecedented detail.
Broader color space: HDMI 1.3 adds support for “x.v.Color™” (which is the consumer name describing the IEC 61966-2-4 xvYCC color standard), which removes current color space limitations and enables the display of any color viewable by the human eye
Lip Sync: Because consumer electronics devices are using increasingly complex digital signal processing to enhance the clarity and detail of the content, synchronization of video and audio in user devices has become a greater challenge and could potentially require complex end-user adjustments. HDMI 1.3 incorporates automatic audio synching capabilities that allows devices to perform this synchronization automatically with total accuracy.
New HD lossless audio formats: In addition to HDMI’s current ability to support high-bandwidth uncompressed digital audio and all currently-available compressed formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS®), HDMI 1.3 adds additional support for new lossless compressed digital audio formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.

You shall go to the ball!
Last year’s 705 was the Cinderella of the Onkyo ‘lets conquer the world’ ball. It was essentially a 605 in a fancy frock, but it cost £200 more, so it didn’t prove to be anywhere near as popular as the other models in the range.
This year, however, things look set to be very different. One glance at the 706’s back panel tells you that this is very definitely not a tweaked 606 – in fact, the layout bears a striking resemblance to the top series of Onkyo amps. Onkyo are saying that the 706 has been re-worked from the ground up, giving it class leading performance, as well as four HDMI 1.3 inputs, 7 x 160 watts, true HD sound, THX Select 2 plus, Bi-amping capability for front speakers, iPod connectivity, Audyssey multEQ room calibration and full 1080p upscaling. In other words, it gets close to its big brothers on the sound front, but at a significantly lower price. On top of that, it is nowhere near as bulky as the 806 or 876, so it will fit into many racks and cabinets that would be out of the question for the bigger Onkyo amps. It’s early days yet, but one top magazine has already heaped praise on the 706, declaring it to be the pick of the new season amps.
You could say that Cinderella has turned into ‘a bit of a goer’ !
The official manual for this product is as thick as a telephone directory and appears to have been written by an alien. Our famous quickstart guides are written in-house by real people and will tell you in simple, easy to follow steps, how to get the very best out of your new purchase. Each amp we sell has its own specific guide, which is typically ten A4 pages long and covers all aspects of setup, including room layout, wiring and menu navigation. The guides also give you all the 'tips of the trade' that you get to know by being a specialist retailer for 20 years. Customer feedback indicates that these guides are worth their weight in gold - but we provide them absolutely free of charge!
In this country, the traditional way of terminating speaker cable is to use 4mm banana plugs. However, this amp is sold all around the world and in some countries, such plugs would be dangerous, because they would fit straight into a mains socket. For this reason, manufactures discourage the use of 4mm plugs by 'bunging up' the speaker outlets on their amplifiers. This forces customers to use bare-wire, which increases the likelihood of short-circuits and is incredibly tedious, particularly if good quality (i.e. thick) speaker cable is being used. Many of our customers therefore request that we remove the amp bungs for them. Even though it can be tricky and time consuming, we are happy to offer this service totally free of charge. Just as well really, because (as people who have bought the amp elsewhere have found!) this is not something that some customers can do on their own.
Many dealers quote delivery times of 3 to 5 days. Our courier delivery service is super-fast and super-secure. Goods are normally delivered overnight, which means they arrive far more quickly (and in one piece!) Please note that we DO NOT export.
Some dealers only offer a 1 year guarantee on this product, then charge extra for an extended warranty. We offer a full 2 year guarantee free of charge!
