This is a great system (click here if you want to know why) but Tannoy have a bit of a problem with it at the moment. To put it bluntly, they've run out of subs!
The net result of this, is that many dealers are not going to be able to sell you an F1 Custom system for some time. It would be exactly the same for us, except for the fact that we've come up with a plan so cunning that even Baldric would be proud of it. For a limited period only, we are going to upgrade the F1 Custom sub to MJ Acoustic's superbaward-winning, remote controlReference 100 MkII, and swap our standard subwoofer lead for QED's Superb £45 MP-SW micro subwoofer lead. What's more, you will get this upgrade bundle (worth £95 more than the Tannoy sub) AT NO EXTRA CHARGE!
Well it's not your fault that Tannoy have run out of subs is it?! But you'll have to be quick - we haven't got many of these systems left, so once they're all gone, you'll be (as Black Adder would say) up a certain creek, without a certain instrument!
Back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I first started selling Hi-Fi, the recipe for designing a good pair of speakers was quite simple - stick a couple of big drivers in a big box, shove some foam on the front, say a few prayers, and you'd got yourself a major sales success. Then everything changed - people stopped using Jimmy Hendrix as a measuring tool and started using a new fangled thing called 'SCIENCE' instead. As a result, speakers generally got a lot better and also a lot smaller too. No one seemed interested in applying all this new technology to a mid-sized speaker, which is a shame because if they had, they would have ended up with something that completely blew away even the best small units.
And that in a nutshell is exactly what Tannoy have just done with their excellent F1 custom system. People have got so used to hearing good small speakers, that they have forgotten how much better a proper mid-sized speaker can be. These speakers are still only 12 inches tall, i.e. not much bigger than the popular 'pretty-pretty' micro sat-sub systems, - but they sound an awful lot better.
These new Tannoys only go to prove what my wife says to me every night - a good big one beats a good small one every time (or is that what she says to the window cleaner...)
